We have become obsessed with the idea that we deserve to be immortal, to escape the bonds of mortality, to elude death. A life lived well is no longer a satisfactory ending as we attempt to alter the narrative and add pages to our longevity. We have outgrown the known mantras of superlative diets and ubiquitous exercising and look to the horizons of gene therapy, blood transfusions and cognitive transfers. Death can incite fear in those with an absent or transparent veil of religion. It can impart comfort and solace as a all encompassing resort for the faithful. It can fuel anger in those too arrogant to believe they are destined to the same fate as the cattle flying in coach. This consuming ambition can often cloud our morals in the pursuit of eternal bliss. It can gestate into blind thinking that life beyond our mortal coil can be halted if not abandoned. We may forget to live in the moment as an alter sacrifice for a better life just over the next hill. People take great measures (medically, physically and mentally) to ensure they are sharpening their viability against the ravages of time only to keel over by a heart attack or succumb to a vile cancer that came out of nowhere. Is there a tipping point where no matter what we do, we will bow our heads to that infinite sleep? Do you want to simply exist, incognizant of your surroundings yet hold a medal for joining the century club? When is enough, enough?
Whatever your choice, may it be an enjoyable one filled with much laughter. May you eat the fruits of life and ask for seconds. Dance even though you obviously can`t. Now listen to these soulful sirens and rhythm casters to seek peace.
