01. The Shuzz 3
Joey Slick
The brilliance of the sun gave way to warm embers blanketing the horizon to mark another serenade to the day. Distant smells of barbecue and fluttering wings of birds nesting for the evening surrounded us. My mother hummed softly as we strolled through the neighborhood and the dim light embraced her smiling face. She clasped onto my arm for support as I did with her as an infant child. How many more days ahead we did not know, but were satisfied with the days bounty and the knowledge that our small clowder of furry friends was once more safe in the bosom of our home. For in the darkness of the absent moon on lightened foot and spectral eyes, they did infiltrate the outdoor patio to survey the odd shelter and offerings laid bare. The children near full grown padded on the warm stones and lapped up the cool water with ample thirst as their mother looked on with disinterest. Their hunger seemed at bay for they nibbled on the food with absent mindedness and were more inclined to wrangle with each other in seemingly a safe enclave. I slept soundly in the knowledge that their lives were still pounding with their wild hearts and I could lap up the scraps of affection they were willing to part with.
